Spanning the country coast-to-coast-to-coast, the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) is a 16,000-km-long work-in-progress that will be the longest trail in the world when complete. A multi-use recreational trail designed for hiking, biking, horseback riding and other pleasures, it strings together existing trail and new trail while traveling through ever-changing landscape, wilderness and countryside, community to community.

The guidebooks to Newfoundland, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick are now available to show the way, written by Sue Lebrecht, published by Canadian Geographic Enterprises.

Designed to be as user-friendly as possible, the books to each province are consistent in layout, voice and structure. All are ring-bound for easy page turning, and all have a front cover flap that opens into an overview map of the provincial route. Detailed maps are presented in each chapter with kilometre points corresponding with kilometre points in the text, and with attractions, amenities and other features earmarked with icons.

Individual chapters are designed to stand on their own; travelers need not read the whole book in order to dive right in, anywhere on the trail. Included are day-trip and weekend suggestions that take in various highlights.

Each chapter, which ranges roughly from three to six days on bike, starts with a quick overview, then presents a play-by-play, followed by a section called Services, listing lodging, camping and other facilities in the communities and parks en route. Sidebars on history, culture, flora, fauna and other topics are interspersed throughout.
